Pryazovskyi State Technical University (PSTU)
Pryazovskyi State Technical University (PSTU) is one of Ukraine’s most distinguished technical universities, with a rich history spanning over nine decades. Founded in 1930 in Mariupol as the Mariupol Metallurgical Institute, the institution played a crucial role in the industrial and scientific development of southeastern Ukraine. Over the years, PSTU expanded its educational focus, gained international recognition, and adapted to global technological advancements.

1. The Historical Evolution of PSTU
Foundation and Early Years (1930s-1940s)
PSTU was originally founded as the Mariupol Metallurgical Institute to support the growing metallurgical industry in the Donetsk region of Ukraine. The primary goal was to train highly qualified engineers for steel production, mechanical engineering, and industrial development.
During World War II, the university’s operations were temporarily halted, and many students and faculty members joined the war effort. After the war, PSTU played a crucial role in rebuilding Mariupol’s metallurgical industry, regaining its status as a center of technical education.
Expansion and Growth (1950s-1990s)
During the Soviet era, the institute underwent rapid development. New faculties were established in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and civil engineering, reflecting the growing needs of the economy. By the 1970s, it became a leading technical institution in Ukraine.
In 1993, following Ukraine’s independence, the institute was reorganized as Pryazovskyi State Technical University (PSTU). This transformation marked a shift towards multidisciplinary education, research innovation, and international partnerships.
Modernization and Internationalization (2000s-2021)

At the beginning of the 21st century, PSTU actively modernized its educational system by aligning with the Bologna Process, introducing European educational standards. The university expanded its programs in computer science, management, and environmental studies, while also integrating distance learning technologies.
PSTU established partnerships with universities with more then 50 international pertners all over the world and joined international academic programs, such as Erasmus+, promoting student and faculty exchange.
2. Relocation and Transformation: PSTU in the Context of War
Impact of the Russian Invasion (2022-Present)
In 2022, due to the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, Mariupol suffered extensive destruction and occupation, making it impossible for PSTU to continue its activities in the city. As a result, the university was relocated to Dnipro, where it resumed its educational and research activities (Order of the Ministry of Science and Education of Ukraine dated Apr.13 2022, № 334)
Challenges and Adaptation in Dnipro
Despite the relocation, PSTU has maintained its academic excellence by:
- Adapting to online and hybrid learning formats
- Establishing partnerships with Dnipro Polytechnic University for shared facilities
- Securing international support and humanitarian aid for students and faculty
The relocation provided PSTU with an opportunity to expand its academic collaborations and reimagine its role in Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction.
